President Barzani does not reject term extension
President of Kurdistan, Masoud Barzani, has released a statement yesterday July 16, 2013 announcing that he will neither accept nor refuse the Parliament’s decision on his term extension for two more years.

President Barzani has said that he will run his office until the new elected parliament of Kurdistan, which will be elected on September 21st, gather all the political parties of the region and makes a national concession about the draft constitution of Kurdistan Region.

Barzani has also said that as long as the parliament adjusts the draft constitution and all the political parties of the region agree with the adjustment, “I will leave the chair of presidency” and parliament will be responsible for holding presidential elections soon.

Barzani's presidency had been due to end this summer, when his second term of four years ends. Kurdish lawmakers voted in Parliament authorized President Barzani to stay in power for two more years.

Parliament announced that President Barzani will remain in power until August 19, 2015; the decision came after the majority of voters agreed on the extension of presidency term while it caused tension in Parliament hall among main parties and oppositions.
