Aoun, 60, who has served as Lebanon’s army chief since March 2017, was set to retire in January 2024. However, his tenure was extended twice during the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. Known for maintaining a low profile, Aoun avoided media appearances and never officially announced his candidacy for the presidency.
His election marks a significant step in addressing Lebanon’s political crisis, as the country faces profound economic and social challenges. Prime Minister Barzani’s message reflects the Kurdistan Region’s acknowledgment of the importance of stability and progress in Lebanon and the broader Middle East.
