Syrian Democratic Forces Reaffirm Commitment to Syria’s Unity
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which govern an autonomous region in northeastern Syria, have reiterated their commitment to the territorial integrity of the country, distancing themselves from any separatist movements.
In a statement on Wednesday, SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi emphasized their stance to Damascus authorities, asserting the importance of preserving Syria’s unity.
"We agree that we are for the unity and integrity of Syrian territory and reject any division projects that threaten the country's unity," Abdi stated in a message to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Key Player in the Fight Against ISIS
The SDF, backed by the United States, has been instrumental in the battle against ISIS, emerging as a significant force in northeastern Syria. Despite their role in combating terrorism and administering a substantial portion of the region, the SDF remains committed to a united Syria.
Balancing Autonomy and National Unity
The statement comes as various parties continue negotiations for a political solution to Syria’s prolonged conflict. Discussions have focused on reconciling regional autonomy with national sovereignty, a sensitive topic in the war-torn nation.
By reiterating their opposition to secessionist agendas, the SDF seeks to reassure both local and international stakeholders of their commitment to a united Syria.
