Barzani Urges Focus on Water Security and Economic Self-Reliance at Mesopotamia Medical Conference
Erbil, Kurdistan Region — President Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), delivered a keynote address at the opening of the Mesopotamia Medical Conference in Erbil on Thursday, emphasizing the need for strengthened water security and a shift toward agricultural and economic self-reliance. Speaking to a gathering of doctors, scientists, and policymakers, Barzani outlined a vision for a resilient Kurdistan prepared to face future resource challenges.
Barzani highlighted the critical importance of water security, cautioning that water scarcity will become one of the most pressing issues facing the Region. “I don’t know how far or near in the future, but the water problem will be the main challenge,” he stated, quoting the Quranic verse, “We made from water every living thing,” to underscore the resource’s essential role. He also praised recent efforts by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to build dams and called for further investment in water infrastructure to ensure sustainability.
The KDP leader also urged diversification of Kurdistan’s economy beyond its traditional reliance on oil. He advocated for stronger support for the agricultural and tourism sectors, describing them as vital for a sustainable economy. “Yes, oil is important, but oil will run out today or tomorrow; agriculture and tourism will not,” Barzani said, stressing that these sectors could provide long-term economic stability.
In light of the recent peaceful elections, Barzani called for political unity among Kurdistan’s parties, underscoring the principle of “one region, one parliament, one government, and one Peshmerga force.” His message emphasized the need for open dialogue and cooperation among political entities to ensure stability and progress in the Region.
Concluding his speech, Barzani commended the dedication of medical professionals, describing their work as a “sacred duty” and expressing gratitude for their service to Kurdish society. “Your hands are sacred, and thank you,” he said, acknowledging their contributions to the community and the broader Region.
The Mesopotamia Medical Conference, attended by leading medical professionals and health sector policymakers, will focus on advancing healthcare solutions and addressing current challenges in the Kurdistan Region’s health system.
