Kurdistan Regional Government Initiates Flood Prevention Measures with New Ponds in Erbil

In response to years of recurrent flooding in Erbil province, the 9th Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has intensified efforts to mitigate the problem by constructing ponds and water reservoirs around the city.

According to a statement from Erbil Provincial Media on Thursday, five new ponds will be built near Erbil, with two of them located in Khanzad and Grdarash. These efforts are part of a larger plan to build 45 ponds, of which 33 have already begun construction. Some ponds have been completed, while others are still underway.

Officials from the relevant departments emphasized that these ponds and water reservoirs are being built to protect Erbil from the damage and harm caused by floods. The initiative includes the allocation of substantial funds and the provision of technical expertise, labor, and logistic support to address the issue.

The KRG’s commitment to flood prevention follows several years of significant flooding in various areas of Erbil province, which prompted the regional government to dedicate large budgets and implement preventive measures. The new water management infrastructure aims to ensure long-term protection for the city and its residents.
