US, UK, and France Urge Swift Formation of New Kurdistan Regional Government Following Elections

The United States, United Kingdom, and France have called for the rapid formation of a new government in the Kurdistan Region following the successful parliamentary elections held on October 18 and 20.

U.S. Ambassador to Baghdad, Alina Romanowski, extended her congratulations to the people of Kurdistan and political parties for what she described as a smooth electoral process. "Staff from the U.S. envoy in Iraq monitored the voting process at all polling centers in the Kurdistan Region and praised the people of the region for their commitment to democracy," Romanowski said in a statement on Monday.

However, she noted that Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) reported technical issues with reading some voters' fingerprints and urged the commission to address these problems ahead of Iraq’s parliamentary elections scheduled for 2025. Romanowski added that the formation of a new government "will pave the way for the Kurdistan Regional Government to strengthen its democratic institutions, enhance human rights, and promote economic development."

French Ambassador to Iraq, Patrick Durel, also lauded the elections, calling the vote "an important political step for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole." In a Facebook post, Durel welcomed the high voter turnout, expressing satisfaction with the region’s democratic progress.

The British Consulate General in Erbil echoed these sentiments, emphasizing in a social media post that "the high voter turnout sends a strong message in support of restoring democracy." The consulate added, "We look forward to the swift resumption of parliament and the formation of a new government."

The elections saw a large turnout, signaling strong public engagement in the political process, with international and local observers applauding the smooth conduct of the vote.
