Iraqi Official Exposes Turkey's Violations of Water Agreements, Proposes Solutions to End Crisis

On Friday, Hussein Mardan, a member of the Iraqi Parliament's Agriculture, Water, and Forestry Committee, revealed Turkey's ongoing violations of Iraq's water share agreements. Speaking to local media, Mardan highlighted that despite previous decisions between the Iraqi government and Turkey, the latter has not complied with the agreed water release quotas.

"Turkey agreed to release 700,000 cubic meters of water to Iraq, but in reality, only 300,000 or sometimes as low as 180,000 cubic meters have been released," Mardan stated. He described this shortfall as a clear violation of established agreements and detrimental to Iraq's water security.

Mardan emphasized the critical importance of Turkish water resources, pointing out that over 87% of Iraq's water comes from Turkey, with only 7% from Iran and 8% from domestic sources. He stressed that Iraq's reliance on Turkish water for its supply makes it crucial for both nations to adhere to water-sharing agreements.

During recent visits to Iraq's prime minister and president, Mardan and other officials called for practical solutions to limit these violations. They also urged Turkey to participate in international agreements on shared water resources, such as the Common Seas and Common Waters Agreement.

Additionally, Mardan highlighted the insufficient budget allocated to Iraq's Ministry of Water Resources, which he described as "miserable" and incapable of addressing the crisis effectively. He called for a substantial budget increase, proposing that over five trillion dinars be allocated to both the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture. This funding would modernize Iraq's irrigation systems and help combat the ongoing water crisis.
