Iraq Dismantles 225 Drug Trafficking Networks in Seven Months
In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Iraqi authorities have dismantled 225 drug networks, including 20 international and 205 domestic networks, in the first seven months of this year, according to the latest statistics from the Iraqi Interior Ministry. The operation led to the seizure of approximately two tons of drugs and the arrest of more than 7,700 suspects.
Yassir Askandar, a member of the Security and Defense Committee of the Iraqi Parliament, highlighted that Iraq has become a transit country for drugs smuggled from neighboring nations since 2003. "The amount of drugs seized this year is equivalent to the total amount seized in recent years," Askandar noted, underscoring the scale of the operation.
Askandar further explained that Iraq has developed a roadmap for dismantling drug trafficking networks with assistance from neighboring countries. The cooperation has resulted in the dismantling of several local and international networks and the seizure of significant quantities of drugs.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani has called for the formation of a regional coalition to further combat drug trafficking. He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts between Iraq's intelligence agency and the Foreign Ministry to ensure the extradition of individuals involved in drug trafficking activities.
