Kurdistan Prime Minister Inaugurates British International University in Erbil

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, officially opened the British International University in Erbil today in a ceremony attended by numerous officials and academic figures.

In his address, Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the significance of the new university in introducing British educational expertise to the Kurdistan Region. He noted that this initiative would play a key role in elevating the region’s educational standards while fostering cultural, scientific, and economic ties with the United Kingdom.

"The Kurdistan Region is home to a young and dynamic population, and investing in their education is essential for securing a prosperous future," Barzani stated. He highlighted the importance of globally recognized institutions in enhancing the skills of the region's youth, preparing them to contribute to development across various sectors.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for a stronger focus on scientific research within higher education, identifying a gap in research across fields such as agriculture, industry, economy, and the environment. He urged local universities to collaborate with international academic institutions to conduct joint research and tackle pressing issues.

Barzani also underlined the role the British International University could play in advancing research partnerships with the UK, drawing on its rich academic heritage. Environmental sustainability was a focal point in his remarks, as he praised the university's initiatives, including the creation of a water pond and the dedication of extensive areas to renewable energy and green spaces. These projects, he noted, reflect a strong commitment to environmental protection and addressing climate change.

The Prime Minister concluded by calling on universities and academic centers to take an active role in addressing environmental challenges, expressing his hope that students will seize the opportunities offered by the British International University to become leaders and role models in serving their homeland.
