KRG Announces Start of New Academic Year on September 25, 2024

On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) confirmed that the new academic year for 2024-2025 will officially begin on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. The announcement came following a meeting of the Ministry of Education's council, which finalized the school calendar and preparations for the upcoming year.

This year, over 1.72 million students in public schools and more than 132,000 students in private schools will resume their studies across the Kurdistan Region. The educational workforce will consist of more than 118,000 permanent teachers and over 38,000 contract teachers.

Since the ninth cabinet took office, significant improvements in educational infrastructure have been made. A total of 125 new schools have been built, and 42 kindergartens and schools are currently under construction and set to be completed for the new academic season. Additionally, 1,800 schools have been renovated, and 640 new classrooms have been added, effectively addressing the issue of overcrowded classrooms. These developments are expected to minimize overtime teaching in most schools across the region.

In a positive step toward reducing school dropout rates, more than 26,384 students who had previously left the educational system have been reintegrated into schools. This initiative reflects the KRG's commitment to improving access to education for all students in the region.
