Iraqi National Security Agency Makes Significant Arrests in Terrorism, Drug Trafficking, and Cyber Harassment
The Iraqi National Security Agency (INSA) has reported a series of significant arrests this year, reflecting its continued efforts to combat terrorism, drug trafficking, and cybercrime.
According to Abu Ali Basri, head of the INSA, the agency has apprehended 192 individuals on terrorism charges and 478 on drug trafficking charges in 2024. This demonstrates Iraq's critical role in global security efforts, with ongoing initiatives to dismantle terrorist networks and apprehend their members.
Basri revealed that among those arrested under Article 4 of the Counter-Terrorism Law, 21 were detained in Sulaymaniyah. Notably, one of the suspects was a senior member of the Islamic State in Fallujah, and another served as an administrative member of the group. Additionally, the arrest of Abu Hajar, identified as “one of the most dangerous terrorists,” was highlighted. Abu Hajar had previously issued threats to residents of Baghdad’s Tarmiya district.
In the realm of cybercrime, the INSA has taken substantial action by arresting 600 individuals this year on charges of cyber harassment. This reflects the agency's commitment to addressing digital threats and ensuring online safety.
The agency has also targeted drug trafficking, with 478 drug dealers now in custody. Furthermore, the INSA has made strides in economic security, arresting individuals involved in manipulating the price of the dollar and those involved in wheat smuggling operations. In these operations, a total of 6,000 tons of wheat was seized, which was fraudulently intended to be sold to the government as domestic produce.
These actions underscore the INSA’s ongoing efforts to uphold national and international security through comprehensive and multifaceted operations.
