Iran Could Produce Material for Nuclear Bomb in One to Two Weeks, Warns US Secretary of State

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a stark warning on Friday, stating that Iran could produce enough fissile material for a nuclear bomb within one to two weeks if it decided to do so.

Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, Blinken criticized former President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal, suggesting that this move has significantly reduced the time Iran would need to achieve breakout capacity.

“Instead of being at least a year away from having the breakout capacity of producing fissile material for a nuclear weapon, it is now probably one or two weeks away from doing that,” Blinken said.

The Secretary of State emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the accelerated timeline as a critical security concern.

The 2015 nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), aimed to limit Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. However, the US withdrawal from the deal in 2018 under President Trump led to the reinstatement of sanctions and a subsequent increase in Iran's nuclear activities.
