Sweden’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that it will summon the Iraqi chargé d’affaires in Stockholm to protest against the recent death sentences handed to Swedish citizens in Iraq.

Last month, Sweden expressed its discontent over a death sentence given to a Swedish national. On Thursday, two additional cases were confirmed, bringing the total to at least three Swedes who have been sentenced to death in Iraq in recent weeks. According to the Foreign Ministry, all the cases are linked to a deadly shooting incident that occurred earlier this year.

“We are acting to ensure that the sentences are not carried out," the ministry said, reiterating Sweden's staunch opposition to the death penalty. "We oppose it always, everywhere and under any circumstances,” it added.

The ministry confirmed that it has been in contact with the Swedes and their families but declined to provide further details, citing privacy regulations.

Swedish media reported that the three Swedes are accused of involvement in the murder of a criminal in Iraq. The killing, which occurred earlier this year, is believed to be connected to a gang war between two Swedish groups, Foxtrot and its rival, Rumba. This feud has resulted in numerous killings and attempted murders, some of which have taken place outside Sweden.

The summoning of the Iraqi chargé d’affaires highlights Sweden’s grave concerns over the handling of these cases and underscores its firm opposition to the death penalty.
