Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Announces Agricultural Revolution, Lays Foundation for Modern Market in Akre

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani declared a significant agricultural reform initiative during a special speech, highlighting his administration's efforts to transform the region's agricultural sector. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a new modern fruit and vegetable market in Akre on Tuesday, Barzani emphasized the region's strategic focus on agriculture, farming, and tourism.

"Akre is one of the oldest towns in Iraq and the region, with immense geographical, agricultural, and touristic importance," PM Barzani stated. "Our government is committed to further developing this region in these crucial sectors."

During his visit, PM Barzani engaged directly with local farmers in the potato fields, where he noted the increasing production rates. "It's gratifying to see that potato production is increasing day by day in the Kurdistan Region," he said. He assured that current production levels are sufficient for Iraq, with a surplus being exported abroad, highlighting the international demand for Kurdish agricultural products.

PM Barzani's administration is spearheading a comprehensive agricultural reform, aiming to transform the Kurdistan Region into a key food supplier for Iraq and neighboring areas. "We have paid great attention to the agricultural sector, launching a revolution in agricultural reform. This is just the beginning, but our aim is to make Kurdistan a food basket for the entire Iraq and region," he declared.

Addressing the concerns of local farmers about the import of foreign potatoes, which negatively impacts domestic production, PM Barzani promised stringent monitoring by the Agriculture and Finance Ministry. "If we find these activities are conducted illegally, we will take necessary action against them," he warned.

Water scarcity issues were also a significant point of discussion. PM Barzani outlined plans to construct several dams, including one in Bakrman in Akre, to support the region's farmers. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance agricultural infrastructure and ensure sustainable water resources for farming.

Under PM Barzani's leadership, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has prioritized infrastructure expansion, earning the cabinet recognition as a "public services-focused cabinet." The government's strategic initiatives also include industrial expansion and revenue diversification, with a special focus on key sectors such as agriculture, farming, and tourism.

The new modern fruit and vegetable market in Akre is set to become a cornerstone of the region's agricultural economy, facilitating better market access for local farmers and contributing to the overall economic development of the Kurdistan Region.

As PM Barzani continues to drive these transformative initiatives, the Kurdistan Region is poised to become a pivotal player in the agricultural sector, both domestically and internationally.
