On Sunday, June 9th, Masoud Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), held a significant meeting with Patrick Durel, the French Ambassador to Iraq, as confirmed by a statement from the Barzani Headquarters. The discussions focused on the current political and security landscape in Iraq and the broader Middle East, as well as the various challenges impacting regional stability.

Both leaders underscored the robust and amicable relations between the Kurdistan Region and France. They highlighted the importance of maintaining and enhancing these friendly ties, recognizing the mutual benefits of such a relationship.

During the meeting, Barzani expressed his gratitude towards France, particularly emphasizing the enduring appreciation of the Kurdish people for the supportive and sympathetic role played by the French government and its citizens during challenging times. He specifically acknowledged the pivotal role of French authorities in 1991, when the Paris government championed Security Council Resolution 688. This resolution was instrumental in establishing a peaceful zone to safeguard the Kurdish population.

The dialogue also touched upon the upcoming Kurdistan parliamentary elections scheduled for this year. Both parties emphasized the critical importance of conducting clean and fair elections to ensure the integrity and democratic process of the region.
