Kirkuk to Elect New Governor Amidst Political Consensus: Kurdistan Region Interior Minister Confirms Kurdish Leadership

In a significant political development, Rebar Ahmed, the Interior Minister of the Kurdistan Region, announced on Sunday that Kirkuk province is set to elect a new governor who will be acceptable to all factions within the province. This statement comes amid ongoing efforts to address the political stalemate that has left the province without a governor for five months following the recent elections.

During a press conference, Minister Ahmed emphasized that the newly elected governor will "definitely" be a Kurd, reflecting the ethnic composition and political aspirations of the region. His remarks followed a recent visit by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to Baghdad, where discussions centered on resolving outstanding issues in accordance with the Iraqi constitution.

"We will hold intensive discussions with the parties to elect a governor for Kirkuk in the near future, and we will elect someone who will be accepted by all communities to serve the people of Kirkuk," Ahmed stated, underscoring the collaborative approach being taken to address the needs and concerns of Kirkuk's diverse population.

The topic of disputed areas, including Kirkuk, was also a focal point in last week’s Erbil-Baghdad leadership meetings. Minister Ahmed highlighted the security gaps in these areas and noted that both sides were considering the formation of joint brigades to enhance security and stability.

In a parallel statement, Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Shakhawan Abdullah reiterated the urgency of appointing a Kurdish governor for Kirkuk. Speaking to Kurdistan 24, Abdullah expressed dissatisfaction with the current administrative situation in the province and indicated a strong desire for change.

"The results of the provincial council elections and the merits of the communities will be taken into account. We held the election to change the current administration and form a new local government in Kirkuk and appoint a Kurdish governor for the province," Abdullah said.

Recent meetings between political parties in Kirkuk and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani have paved the way for a provincial council session aimed at forming the local government. This session is expected to break the prolonged deadlock and establish a new governance structure in Kirkuk.

The political landscape in Kirkuk has been marked by disputes among Kurdish, Arab, and Turkmen factions, each vying for influence and representation in the provincial administration. The forthcoming election of a governor is seen as a crucial step toward stabilizing the province and ensuring equitable governance for all its communities.
