Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Discusses Election Preparedness with UK Ambassador

In anticipation of the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani engaged in discussions with UK Ambassador to Iraq, Stephen Hitchen, highlighting key concerns and objectives for ensuring a fair and inclusive electoral process. The meeting, held on Tuesday, underscored mutual commitments to resolving challenges that could hinder the conduct of transparent and inclusive elections.

During their exchange, Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the importance of addressing issues that might impede fair elections and reiterated the necessity of including all political parties in the electoral process. His sentiments were echoed in an official statement shared on his Facebook page, reaffirming support for a transparent and internationally observed election that upholds the rights of all components within the Kurdistan Region.

The dialogue also touched upon the enduring relations between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom, with a particular focus on London's ongoing support for the Peshmerga Ministry as part of the US-led Coalition in the fight against the Islamic State (IS). Discussions highlighted the strategic significance of ensuring the Kurdistan Region's financial entitlements and the continued backing for the Peshmerga forces.

The parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region are scheduled for June 10, 2024, amidst challenges stemming from a ruling by Iraq's Federal Supreme Court, which annulled the allocation of quota seats in the Kurdistan parliament. This decision has raised concerns, particularly within the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), regarding the representation of minority groups in the Region.

The KDP, a prominent political entity in the Kurdistan Region, has vehemently opposed the court's ruling, citing it as a violation of minority rights and democratic principles. The party has emphasized its commitment to upholding democratic practices and preserving the Kurdistan Region's constitutional institutions within Iraq's federal framework.

Ari Harsin, head of the KDP's branch in Sulaymaniyah, reiterated the party's stance on the upcoming elections, emphasizing the crucial role of KDP's participation in ensuring the legitimacy of the electoral process. Harsin underscored that the KDP's involvement is essential for the successful conduct of the elections, emphasizing the party's dedication to safeguarding the democratic rights of Kurdistan's populace within the federal system of Iraq.

The discussions between Prime Minister Barzani and Ambassador Hitchen underscored a shared commitment to advancing democratic governance in the Kurdistan Region, amidst efforts to address electoral challenges and promote inclusive representation in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
