Kurdistan Region Welcomes Over 1.7 Million Tourists in 2024, Demonstrating Resilient Tourism Sector

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced that more than 1.7 million tourists have flocked to the Kurdistan Region since the start of the year, with over 200,000 visitors exploring the region during the six-day Eid al-Fitr holiday. This influx underscores the growing allure of Kurdistan as a tourist destination, driven by its breathtaking natural landscapes and renowned hospitality.

Amidst the picturesque backdrop of Kurdistan's natural scenery, tourists from around the world, including those from Basra, have expressed satisfaction with their experiences. Attractions such as Erbil Castle, Bekhal, and Korek have captured the hearts of visitors, showcasing the region's cultural richness and historical charm.

Erbil, often regarded as the cultural and economic hub of the Kurdistan Region, continues to enchant travelers despite challenges posed by the lasting impacts of the war with the Islamic State (IS) and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The resilience of Erbil's tourism sector is evident in its steady growth over recent years, defying adversities to maintain its appeal to global tourists.

The tourism sector in the Kurdistan Region has witnessed remarkable growth, with a staggering six million tourists in 2022, surging to seven million in 2023, marking a notable 16% increase from the previous year. This upward trajectory highlights Kurdistan's enduring appeal as a destination that seamlessly blends cultural heritage with natural beauty, attracting travelers seeking enriching experiences.

Amal Jalal, Head of the KRG Tourism Board, emphasized, "The increase in tourism reflects the captivating allure of Kurdistan, from its breathtaking landscapes to the warm hospitality of its people. Despite challenges, our region continues to welcome visitors with open arms, offering an unforgettable blend of culture and natural wonders."

As Kurdistan Region's tourism sector continues to thrive, it reinforces its status as a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide, promising unforgettable experiences amidst a backdrop of rich history and stunning landscapes.
