Barzani Stresses KDP's Commitment to Transparent Electoral Process, Rejects Election Boycott
Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), affirmed the party's stance on the upcoming parliamentary elections, stating that they are not seeking a boycott but instead are advocating for a transparent and clean electoral process. This announcement came during a meeting between Barzani and US Ambassador to Iraq Alina L. Romanowski in Erbil, where they discussed various political developments, including the KDP's position on the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
During the meeting, Barzani reiterated the KDP's commitment to democratic principles, emphasizing the importance of conducting the elections in a manner that ensures transparency, security, and freedom from external interference. He underscored the party's long-standing support for elections, dating back to the early 1990s, and highlighted its dedication to constitutional legitimacy.
Barzani also expressed concerns about potential threats to coexistence and community participation in political life, stressing the need for a preliminary program to safeguard voters' rights and uphold the integrity of the democratic process.
US Ambassador Romanowski, while congratulating Barzani and the Kurdish people on Newroz, voiced concerns about the political situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. She urged all parties to work together to address issues related to the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of resolving them through dialogue and cooperation.
In addition to discussing electoral matters, Barzani and Romanowski touched upon the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad. Barzani mentioned a comprehensive agreement aimed at achieving stability and prosperity but noted that certain key points of the agreement had yet to be implemented. He emphasized the necessity for continued consultation and coordination between the two sides to address outstanding issues and alleviate concerns.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party's stance on the upcoming parliamentary elections underscores its commitment to democratic principles and transparency in the electoral process. As discussions continue between Kurdish leaders and international diplomats, attention remains focused on ensuring a fair and inclusive election that upholds the rights of all voters in the Kurdistan Region.
