Kurdistan Region Prime Minister and Turkish Defense Minister Emphasize Cooperation for Regional Stability

In a recent meeting between Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Turkish Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler, cooperation between the two nations took center stage as they discussed strategies to maintain stability and security in Iraq and its Kurdish region.

Prime Minister Barzani welcomed Minister Güler and his delegation, which included Chief of the Turkish General Staff Metin Gürak. During the meeting, Barzani emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation and coordination to safeguard security and stability not only within the Kurdistan Region but also in Iraq and the broader region.

In a press release issued by Barzani's office, Minister Güler expressed condolences for the Iranian missile attacks on Erbil that occurred on January 15, condemning them as "unjustifiable." Barzani reiterated his government's commitment to enhancing bilateral ties with Turkey based on principles of good neighborliness and mutual interest.

Barzani reassured Minister Güler that the Kurdistan Region remains a factor of stability and will not pose a threat to its neighbors. Both parties highlighted the significance of implementing the Sinjar Agreement and facilitating the return of internally displaced Yezidis to their areas of origin.

Minister Güler's visit to Iraq included meetings with top officials in Baghdad before his discussion with Prime Minister Barzani. Border security issues between Iraq and Turkey were a focal point of these meetings, particularly concerning the presence of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been engaged in conflict with Ankara since the 1980s.

Kurdistan Region officials have consistently urged Baghdad to take measures to prevent insurgents and foreign militaries from operating within its territory. Concerns have been raised regarding the increasing presence of militia forces in the area.

Following his meeting with Prime Minister Barzani, Minister Güler is expected to meet with Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani in Erbil. The discussions between the two leaders are anticipated to further solidify cooperation efforts aimed at enhancing regional stability and security.
