UN Expresses Concern Over Iraq's Stability Following Erbil Attack

In a recent statement, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) emphasized the critical importance of Iraq's stability and security in all its engagements. The announcement comes in the aftermath of a ballistic missile attack on Erbil on January 15, resulting in the tragic death of four civilians, including prominent Kurdish businessman Peshraw Dizayee, and injuring six others.

The UNAMI post highlighted the heightened risk of Iraq being further drawn into the conflict and expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in the region. The mission's primary focus, however, remains on efforts to bring an end to the Gaza conflict and prevent any potential regional spillover.

The attack on Erbil was claimed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), who asserted that they targeted the "espionage headquarters" of Israeli intelligence. Iran accused the facility of planning "terrorist" acts against the country. Contrary to this claim, the Kurdistan Regional Security Council (KRSC) strongly denied the allegations, stating that the Iranians had used baseless excuses to justify their attack on Erbil.

UNAMI's statement underscores the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to de-escalate tensions in the region, with a particular focus on Iraq's stability and security amid growing concerns of further involvement in the conflict.
