Erbil, Kurdistan Region - In a meeting held on Monday, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Austrian Ambassador to Iraq Andrea Nasi underscored the paramount importance of safeguarding diplomatic missions in Iraq. The high-level discussions also delved into the latest political developments in Iraq and the broader region, with a focus on fortifying bilateral ties.

According to a statement released by the premier's office, both officials emphasized the crucial role of protecting diplomatic missions to ensure the ongoing maintenance of security and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The commitment to upholding the duties of these missions was deemed vital in the face of regional challenges.

The discussions between Barzani and Ambassador Nasi shed light on the historical and special relations between Austria and the Kurdistan Region. Prime Minister Barzani acknowledged Austria's unwavering support for the Kurdish nation at various stages, underscoring the significance of these ties.

The Austrian envoy expressed his country's eagerness to strengthen relations with the Kurdistan Region, reiterating steadfast support for the constitutional entity of the Kurdish region. This sentiment aligns with Austria's recent initiatives to deepen its engagement with Iraq, including the reopening of its diplomatic mission in Baghdad in September 2023.

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg had visited Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, during the said period. The visit marked a pivotal moment as Austria reestablished its diplomatic presence in Iraq, with plans underway to set up an honorary consul in Erbil.

Notably, Austria has played a role in fostering direct connections between the two regions. In December 2006, Austria Airlines became the first European airline to operate direct flights between Erbil and Vienna, enhancing the connectivity and diplomatic relations between Kurdistan and Austria.
