Iraq Supports UN Secretary-General's Move to Invoke Article 99 Over Gaza Conflict

In a significant development, the federal government of Iraq has officially endorsed United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres' decision to invoke Article 99 of the UN Charter regarding the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel.

Iraqi government spokesperson Basim Alawadi stated, "The Iraqi government affirms its backing for the stance of the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, in response to the blatant violations unfolding in Gaza." Alawadi further emphasized Iraq's support for the use of Article 99, allowing the Secretary-General to bring matters to the attention of the Security Council that could threaten international peace and security.

Iraq expressed concern over the human tragedy resulting from the conflict in Gaza and called for immediate international intervention to prevent further escalation. Since the outset of the aggression, Iraq has consistently highlighted the need for unified and responsible international efforts.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres invoked Article 99 on Wednesday, exercising his authority to alert the Security Council to issues that may jeopardize global peace and security. The move comes amid the rekindled Palestinian-Israeli conflict, triggered by a surprise attack from Hamas forces on October 7th, leading to a significant loss of lives on both sides.

In response to the renewed confrontations, Baghdad previously urged the Arab League to convene and address the conflict and the Palestinian cause. Additionally, Iraq has dispatched multiple shipments of humanitarian relief and aid to assist those affected in Gaza. A temporary ceasefire has been observed recently in the region.

The situation remains fluid as the international community closely monitors developments in the conflict, with Iraq standing firm in its support for the UN Secretary-General's initiative to address the pressing issues at hand.
