Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Calls for Collaborative Effort on Federal Oil and Gas Law during Erbil Factory Inauguration

In an effort to strengthen ties between Erbil and Baghdad, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani emphasized the importance of enacting a "federal and modern" oil and gas law during the inauguration of the Van Steel factory in Erbil. The premier asserted that such legislation, grounded in the Iraqi constitution, would not only facilitate the resumption of oil exports but also stand as an accomplishment benefiting the entire nation.

Barzani, addressing the longstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad, highlighted the shared interests that bind the two governments, stating, "We need to enact a federal and modern oil and gas law that is based on the [Iraqi] constitution so that it enables us to resume oil export." He expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration, stating that the common ground between Erbil and Baghdad far outweighs their differences.

The Prime Minister urged both sides to prioritize national interests above all else, emphasizing the need for cooperation to achieve mutual goals. He stated, "What is ahead of us and in common is much more than the existing issues," encouraging a collaborative approach for the benefit of the entire Iraqi population.

Barzani's remarks come in the wake of a Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) delegation's visit to Baghdad on Monday to continue discussions on the budget and Erbil's financial entitlements. The Prime Minister reported "good dialogue" during these talks and expressed hope for a positive understanding between the two parties.

While the Kurdistan Region's share was defined in the three-year budget adopted in June, Erbil has yet to receive its entitled funds. Instead, Baghdad has provided financial support in the form of "loans" to assist the Kurdish government in meeting its obligations, particularly in paying civil servants.

As Erbil and Baghdad engage in ongoing discussions, the call for a collaborative effort to establish a federal and modern oil and gas law reflects a commitment to resolving differences and working towards shared objectives for the benefit of the entire nation.
