Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Commends Kurdistan Islamic Movement's Leader on Successful Congress
Erbil, Kurdistan Region - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani of the Kurdistan Region extended his congratulations to Erfan Ali Abdulaziz, the leader of the Kurdistan Islamic Movement, during a meeting on Saturday. The Prime Minister praised the success of the party's recent congress and Mr. Abdulaziz's re-election as the leader of the movement.
In the discussions that ensued, both leaders addressed the general situation in the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing the paramount importance of solidarity and unity among Kurdish parties for the collective progress of the region.
The Kurdistan Islamic Movement, an Islamist group established in 1987 by Shaykh Uthman Abd-Aziz and other Sunni mullahs, has played a notable role in Kurdish politics. In the 1992 Kurdistan Region parliamentary election, the party secured 5.1% of the vote, securing its position as the third-largest political entity in the autonomous region, following the PUK and KDP.
Despite its historical significance, the party currently holds no seats in either the Kurdistan Region’s Parliament or the Iraqi Council of Representatives. The meeting between Prime Minister Barzani and Mr. Abdulaziz underscores the ongoing efforts to foster collaboration and cohesion among Kurdish political entities.
The Kurdistan Region continues to navigate political dynamics, and such engagements serve as a testament to the commitment of leaders towards promoting stability and cooperation in the region.
