Kurdish Family Sues for Compensation After Turkish Security Forces Destroy Home in Diyarbakir

A Kurdish family in the Rubar village of Turkey's Kurdish province of Diyarbakir has been left homeless and is now seeking compensation after their two-story house was destroyed by Turkish security forces ten months ago. The security forces claimed the demolition was necessary because they believed a man's body had been buried under the property. However, no such body was found during or after the house's destruction.

The house belonged to Mahsun Akboga, a local citizen who invested his resources in building a home for his family after selling inherited land. Mr. Akboga expressed his deep distress, stating, "My children's mental health has been devastated. Whenever they see shovels or security forces, they are afraid and run away. It was very difficult to build the house." He added, "I said that even if I died, I do not want my children to be homeless, because we did not have a place [to stay], so I sold the land and funded [the construction of] the house. However, the state came and destroyed my house and left."

To make matters worse, Akboga continues to bear the burden of repaying the loans he took to construct the house, even after its demolition.

Akboga's wife, Mulkiye, expressed her frustration with their situation, stating that they have not received any assistance from the Turkish state. She said, "They flattened our house and turned their backs on us without even asking us."

The youngest daughter of the Akboga family, Sahar, shared her struggles at school, revealing that her classmates mock her due to her family's homeless status.

Despite their hardship, the Akboga family has filed two complaints with the Turkish state in an attempt to rebuild their home and receive compensation for their losses. However, these complaints have not yielded a satisfactory outcome thus far, leaving the family in a state of uncertainty and distress.

The destruction of the Akboga family's home and their ongoing struggle for compensation highlights a pressing issue in the region, raising concerns about the rights and welfare of Kurdish families in Diyarbakir.
