Kurdistan Region Intensifies Crackdown on Drug Trafficking; Arrests Made Across the Region
Zakho, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Region's Anti-Narcotics Directorate has announced a series of successful operations aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks in the region. In a significant development, security forces apprehended a 40-year-old drug dealer in the picturesque town of Zakho.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody on charges of drug trafficking. The operation unfolded as part of a broader effort to combat the illegal drug trade that has been plaguing the region. Upon his arrest, authorities discovered both a cache of illicit substances and a firearm in the suspect's possession, according to security sources.
In recent weeks, the Kurdistan Region's Anti-Narcotics Authority has been actively targeting drug traffickers, leading to a total of eleven arrests across various locations. Among these arrests, three individuals were detained in the capital city of Erbil, while five others were apprehended in the city of Sulaymaniyah and the Qaladiza district.
These actions come in response to a concerning surge in the illegal transportation of narcotics, primarily originating from Syria, into neighboring countries, including Iraq. Both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have intensified their joint efforts to counter this illicit drug trade, conducting frequent anti-drug operations throughout the region.
