Kurdistan Regional Government's Ninth Cabinet Achieves Remarkable Electricity Milestones Despite Financial Challenges
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a commendable display of resilience and innovation, the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has achieved significant milestones in the realm of electricity generation and distribution, despite facing financial constraints brought on by pressure from the Iraqi government and budget cuts.
Under the leadership of the ninth cabinet, the Kurdistan Region has seen a remarkable increase in electricity generation, now reaching a capacity of 3,500 megawatts. This achievement has been attributed to the government's strategic shift towards clean energy sources, combined with an unwavering commitment to delivering essential services to its citizens.
One of the notable achievements is the substantial growth in electricity generation from clean energy sources, which has surged by 10%-15%. As a result, the Kurdistan Region currently serves a staggering 1.85 million electricity customers, meeting their growing energy demands.
To achieve these goals, the ninth cabinet embarked on a multifaceted approach. They began by enhancing existing infrastructure, including the Dukan and Derbandikhan hydropower plants. These upgrades were complemented by the conversion of fuel-based power plants from liquid fuel to liquefied gas, alongside investments in solar and steam power plants to enhance overall energy efficiency.
Moreover, the implementation of a smart system for electricity distribution stands as a testament to the government's dedication to modernization. This system, rolled out across the Kurdistan Region, has not only helped in preventing various violations but also curbed electricity wastage, contributing to improved sustainability.
In addition to these accomplishments, the ninth cabinet introduced smart meters, rehabilitated electricity networks, and announced several initiatives aimed at addressing labor debts. The reorganization of the wind and electricity revenue collection sectors has not only streamlined processes but has also led to increased revenue levels for the Ministry of Electricity.
The Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Electricity now relies on a diverse mix of hydropower, steam, and gas power plants to supply electricity to its growing population. Key power stations include Erbil Station (Cycle Company) with 1500 MW capacity, Sulaimani Station (Cycle Company) also with 1500 MW, Duhok Station with 1000 MW (gas), and Bazian Station with 1000 MW (gas). The Khurmala Power Plant contributes 960 MW, Garmian Station provides 165 MW (gas), and Khabat Power Plant adds 300 MW through steam generation. Meanwhile, Ba'adre Plant generates 150 MW from crude oil, and the Sulaimani-Tasluja Substation contributes 51 MW. The region also benefits from the Dukan Karoawi Power Plant (400 MW) and the Darbandikhan Hydropower Plant (249 MW), along with 29 MW crude oil plants distributed across Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok provinces.
Notably, the ninth cabinet initiated the establishment of two new power plants, the 100 MW Soran Plant and the Dereluk Hydropower Plant, boasting a capacity of 100 MW and 39 MW, respectively.
All of these impressive projects and services were accomplished against the backdrop of a financial crisis induced by pressure from the Iraqi government and cuts in the budget and financial allocations to the Kurdistan Region. Despite these challenges, the demand for electricity as an essential aspect of daily life continues to rise due to population growth, urban expansion, and increased electricity consumption by residents.
A particularly humanitarian highlight of the ninth cabinet's efforts is the provision of electricity to all refugees living in camps on the border of the Kurdistan Region, underscoring the government's commitment to serving its people, regardless of the circumstances.
The ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government has truly demonstrated its dedication to innovation, sustainability, and the well-being of its citizens, achieving impressive feats in the face of adversity.
