Erbil Authorities Intensify Efforts to Control Stray Dog Population

Local authorities in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, are ramping up their campaigns to identify and collect stray dogs within the province, with plans to relocate them to a dedicated shelter.

While the initiatives temporarily slowed down during the hot month of August due to rising temperatures, authorities have announced that the pace of the campaign will gain momentum in the upcoming month. Hemn Mohammed, the director of the shelter, revealed that over 100 stray dogs have already been brought to the shelter. These animals were primarily discovered in neighborhoods and areas surrounding Erbil's city center. Upon arrival at the shelter, the dogs undergo surgical procedures, a critical step in ensuring their health and well-being.

Mohammed stated, "Starting from September, we will significantly accelerate our efforts, expanding our collection of stray dogs within the city of Erbil."

It's worth noting that the dedicated stray dog shelter in Erbil occupies an impressive 50,000 square meters and boasts the capacity to accommodate up to 5,000 dogs. The total cost of constructing this facility surpassed 400 million dinars.

Efforts to control and manage the population of stray animals are paramount for public safety and the welfare of both the animals and the community. The heightened campaign in Erbil underscores the local authorities' unwavering commitment to addressing this issue and ensuring the well-being of residents.
