KDP President Masoud Barzani Engages with Local Communities in Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani embarked on a series of visits to districts within the Kurdistan Region, highlighting his commitment to connect with local communities and address their concerns.

Amedi District: Seeking Stability Amidst Conflict in Kurdistan Region

Barzani's visit to the Amedi district, situated within the Kurdistan Region's Duhok province, took place against the backdrop of ongoing conflict between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the region. Amedi, a northern district, has been significantly affected by this instability.

Turkish forces have regularly shelled and bombed the mountainous areas of the Kurdistan Region, citing suspected PKK positions as their target. This protracted conflict has resulted in civilian casualties and displacement, impacting the local population.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has repeatedly raised concerns about the conflict's adverse effects on public service provision in the area. The Turkish-PKK conflict has taken a toll, with over 40,000 lives lost since its inception in 1984.

KRG officials have consistently called on the central government in Baghdad to intervene and prevent insurgent activities and foreign military presence within the Kurdistan Region.

During his visit to Amedi, President Barzani met with KDP members and officials at Branch 18, as well as community leaders. His outreach efforts underscore his commitment to the Kurdistan Region and his dedication to engaging with local residents.

Akre District: Addressing Citizen Demands in the Kurdistan Region

Barzani's visit to the Akre District, located in the southeast of the Kurdistan Region's Duhok province, emphasized the importance of addressing local demands and enhancing services across various sectors.

He stressed the development of agriculture as a significant source of income, acknowledging the Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government for its efforts in serving the district, supporting farmers, and promoting the agriculture and tourism sectors.

The picturesque town of Akre, nestled amidst three mountains, boasts a rich history and a diverse population, including Muslims, Jews, and Christians. This cultural diversity remains a defining feature of the Kurdistan Region.

Akre is renowned for its natural attractions, including the Sile and Sipa waterfalls, the Shrine of Abdul Aziz al-Jilani, the Church of Mary, and various caves and valleys. The town is also celebrated for its vibrant local culture, traditional Kurdish cuisine, and Newroz celebrations, attracting over 100,000 participants in 2023.

President Masoud Barzani's visits to Amedi and Akre underscore his commitment to engaging with local communities, addressing their concerns, and promoting stability and development within the Kurdistan Region.
