Former ISIS Leader Arrested for Supplying Active Cells in Syria
In a significant blow to the remnants of the Islamic State (ISIS) group, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have arrested a former ISIS leader accused of transporting ammunition and money to the active cells of the group.
According to a statement released by the SDF on Wednesday, the security operation was carried out in the town of Jadeed Bakara, with the support of air surveillance from the global coalition. The operation resulted in the arrest of an unnamed former leader of ISIS, who is also the head of the group’s active cells in the region.
The SDF accused the ISIS leader of being involved in transporting weapons, explosive devices, ammunition, and money to the cells of the organization in the Deir ez-Zor region and north and east Syria. The arrested leader was also involved in drawing up attack plans for the cells he led.
The arrest comes as the SDF has stepped up its raids against ISIS in eastern Syria in recent weeks. Just last Saturday, the force announced the arrest of an ISIS operative, Mohammed al-Sayid, in the same province.
ISIS captured large swathes of Syrian and Iraqi land in 2014, but the group was declared territorially defeated in both countries by 2019. Despite this, the terror group continues to pose a serious risk in the region through hit-and-run attacks, abductions, and bombings.
The US Central Command also announced on Monday that its forces had killed an ISIS senior leader, Abd-al-Hadi Mahmud al-Haji Ali, who was an “operational planner responsible for planning terror attacks in the Middle East and Europe.” Two ISIS operatives were also killed in the operation, which took place in northern Syria.
The recent arrests and military operations against ISIS demonstrate the ongoing threat the group poses in the region, and the determination of local and international forces to continue to combat and eradicate their presence.
