ERBIL — Former governor of Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh, Atheel al-Nujaifi, has warned of Iran’s plan to encourage Sunnis against the presence of US forces in Iraq.

Nujaifi wrote on his official Twitter account that the Sunni population in western territories of Iraq are facing a serious threat posed by Tehran’s plot.

He said the Iranian government, which already enjoys a great hegemony on the Shi’ite-led government of Iraq, is approaching the Iraqi Sunni leaders now to implement its anti-US doctrine by using the Sunnis.

Nujaifi claimed that Tehran is working to find new proxy forces in Iraq to stand against the US presence.
