The United Nations Human Settlements Program, UN-Habitat, has suggested that Kurdistan Region needs to construct 14,000 housing units a year to overcome the housing crisis.

Habitat submitted a strategic plan for housing to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) via Ministry of Construction and Housing and also noted the region's need to 14, 000 housing units a year.

Chief technician of the UN organization Comina Macloni submitted the plan in a meeting with Minister of Construction and Housing Kamaran Ahmed at Cultural Center Hall of Salahaddin University in Erbil.

Macloni explained that the plan has been prepared over three years in cooperation with representatives from KRG.

The UN organization has built 21 housing units in the region since 1996 as part of the oil-for-food program between Iraq and UN.

KRG minister of construction and housing said in the past few years roughly 190,000 housing units have been built in the region.

He also confirmed that his Ministry along with the Ministry of Planning will proceed in executing the Habitat's plan.
