Over 3,000 Syrian refugees have reached Iraq so far, says Ministry of Displacement and Migration
- The Ministry of Displacement and Migration stated Tuesday that the number of Syrian refugees fleeing from the violence in their country to Iraq has reached more than 3,000 people since they were allowed to enter the country.

The Iraqi government allowed the entrance of Syrian refugees into its territory last month. The refugees are arriving at the Qaem Iraqi city on the western borders of Iraq facing the AbuKamal Syrian city that the armed Syrian opposition was able to control.

Since then the city has been subject to bombing by the Syrian army and this led hundreds of Syrians to head to Qaem where they have strong family and tribal ties with the residents. The Iraqi authorities kept the refugees in public schools, put them under heavy guard and prevented them from visiting their relatives. This caused resentment among refugees.

The undersecretary of the Ministry of Displacement and Migration and the head of the emergency cell for receiving returning Iraqis from Syrian and Syrian refugees Salam al-Khafaji said in a statement: "The ministry has agreed to host 230 Syrian refugees who have guarantees in Anbar province.

"The mentioned number is the first batch of those who were hosted after the completion of all legal procedures and in cooperation and coordination with the relevant authorities.

"The next few days will witness the opening of a typical camp for the Syrians in Qaem area that accommodates 500 tents, after securing all the logistics in coordination with the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

"The number of Iraqis returning from Syria reached 15,705 people, while the number of Syrian refugees reached 3,617 people."
