Active participation in decision making is key in Iraq, says parliament speaker
Iraqi parliament speaker and leader of Iraqiya List Osama al-Nujaifi today called for active, national participation in the political decision-making process, stressing the need for adopting the constitution in the peaceful transfer of power.

Osama al-NujefiNujaifi's call came in a speech today at the ceremony held in Baghdad to mark the memorial anniversary of Islamic leader Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim. The ceremony was attended by President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and several political forces.

Nujaifi said: "True partnership is represented in national decision-making and not through misleading the people of Iraq. We seek to implement national reconciliation, not reconciliation at the expense of partisan interests.

"According to the constitutional text, there must be faith in the peaceful transfer of power and the independence of the independent bodies that are stable international bodies and not changing government bodies.

"And there should also be a rejection for politicizing the army and the partisanship of security forces and maintenance of public money and save it and bring the abusers to justice," he added, calling for "non-use of public money and posts for partisan or sectarian purposes".

Nujaifi's statements came as the time limit granted by four prominent political leaders for the National Alliance (NA) to find an alternative to Maliki ended.

The four political figures include Nujaifi as well as leader of the Sadrist Movement Muqtada al-Sadr, Kurdistan's President Massoud Barzani and Iraqiya List leader Ayad Allawi.

The NA is holding meeting to find a unified position about the request to replace Maliki.

The State of Law Coalition has meanwhile renewed its confidence in Maliki continuing as PM.

Iraqiya leader say confidence will be withdrawn from Maliki's government if the PM does not respond positively.
