- Erbil International Airport has welcomed the inaugural flight of Qatar Airways to the Kurdistan Region, bringing the number of scheduled flights to 13 per day.
Airport director Talar Faiq said in a statement: "We welcome Qatar Airways. They're an excellent airline, offering a quality product.

"Their arrival will enhance the choice people have when choosing to travel to the Far East, Middle East, Europe and particularly North America where they fly to Houston, New York and Washington DC."

Faiq added that in the first four months of 2012, Erbil airport witnessed a 52 percent increase in passenger numbers compared with the same period in 2011.

Last month saw a new high, with some 84,275 passengers departing and arriving. The figure marks a 45 percent increase on April last year.

This year Qatar Airways, which won the acclaimed Skytrax Award for the world's best airline, will provide 25 flight routes to both international and domestic destinations.
