IS Exploits Security Vacuum in Areas Between Peshmerga and Iraqi Forces: PM Barzani
ERBIL — Following an Islamic State (IS) attack on the Peshmerga positions on Saturday which killed three Kurdish forces and injured two others, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani reminded that the terrorist group exploits the security vacuum created in the areas disputed between the Peshmerga and Iraqi Army.

In the early hours on Saturday, the IS militants carried out an attack on the Peshmerga positions near Prde, south of Erbil. Following a fierce clash, officials said three Peshmerga soldiers were killed, while two others suffered injuries. There were “many” IS casualties as well.

PM Barzani issued a statement to offer condolences to the families of the martyrs and wish the injured a speedy recovery.

He emphasized that the Kurdistan Region had warned of IS reorganization which could pose a serious threat to certain areas in Iraq, especially the disputed Kurdish territories.

“We reiterate the importance of security cooperation between the Iraqi Army and the Peshmerga forces. We also reaffirm that the Coalition forces’ support and trainings for the Peshmerga and the Iraqi Army are necessary to counter IS and defeating the group,” PM Barzani wrote in a statement.
