Iraqi Prime Minister and US Defense Secretary Discuss Strategic Partnership, Regional Security, and Counterterrorism Efforts

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani held a phone conversation with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Sunday night, focusing on the strategic partnership between Iraq and the United States, regional security challenges, and ongoing counterterrorism efforts. The discussion highlighted shared concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East and the need for coordinated action to address threats posed by extremist groups.

According to a statement released by al-Sudani’s office, Secretary Hegseth provided an update on recent US military operations in Yemen, emphasizing that Washington does not seek further escalation in the region. He stated that US operations would cease once Houthi attacks on American forces and Red Sea navigation are halted. The Prime Minister reiterated Iraq’s firm commitment to de-escalation and dialogue as the most effective means of resolving regional crises, a position he described as consistent with Baghdad’s foreign policy approach.

The two leaders also discussed the importance of continued security cooperation within the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, reaffirming their shared commitment to combating the terrorist group. Al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s dedication to protecting Coalition advisors, who remain in the country at the Iraqi government’s request to support ongoing efforts against ISIS. He expressed gratitude for the Coalition’s role in strengthening Iraq’s security capabilities.

The conversation touched on recent successes in targeting senior ISIS leaders and the need for a coordinated international strategy to prevent the group from rebuilding its operational capacity. Both leaders expressed concern over reports of ISIS’s resurgence in Syria, where the group is said to be acquiring new weapons and reorganizing its ranks. They stressed the importance of intensified international efforts to prevent further instability in the region.

Secretary Hegseth reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Iraq’s security and stability, underscoring the importance of the strategic partnership between the two nations. Both sides agreed to maintain ongoing dialogue and cooperation to advance shared interests and promote regional peace.

The discussion reflects the deepening ties between Iraq and the United States as they work together to address complex security challenges in the Middle East. The leaders’ emphasis on de-escalation and dialogue signals a shared desire to reduce tensions and foster stability in the region.
