U.S. Pushes for Unified Kurdish Military Structure, Delivers Howitzers to Peshmerga

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The United States is intensifying efforts to unify Kurdish military forces under the centralized command of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, U.S. Consul General in Erbil Steve Bitner announced on Thursday. In a comprehensive video statement, Bitner outlined American security priorities in the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing Washington’s commitment to military reform and continued cooperation with Kurdish forces.

"We are working with the Kurdistan Regional Government to integrate the Peshmerga Forces under the command and control of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs to build a professional, unified fighting force," Bitner stated. The move is seen as a crucial step in institutionalizing Kurdish defense capabilities within a coherent military structure.

The U.S. has long supported the Peshmerga Forces in their fight against ISIS, and Bitner reaffirmed that this partnership has played a key role in maintaining security in the region. "Our partnership with the Peshmerga Forces has been instrumental in the fight against ISIS, contributing significantly to the safety and security of the United States and the Kurdistan Region," he said.

As part of ongoing security cooperation, the United States recently delivered howitzer artillery systems to the Peshmerga Forces. The artillery delivery is part of a broader security assistance package that includes training programs, equipment, and strategic advisory support. Bitner highlighted the importance of this new weaponry, stating, "Our recent delivery of Howitzers to the Peshmerga Forces will be crucial for conducting effective military operations against remaining ISIS threats."

Security analysts note that howitzer systems provide significant tactical advantages, allowing precision strikes against ISIS hideouts while minimizing risks to Kurdish personnel.

The U.S. Consul General concluded his statement by reaffirming Washington’s long-term commitment to security cooperation in the region. "We look forward to continuing our joint efforts to protect our shared interests," he said.

The latest developments reflect the ongoing efforts by the U.S. and the Kurdistan Regional Government to strengthen Kurdish military capabilities, ensuring operational readiness against potential security threats in Iraq.
