Kurdish National Council Condemns Exclusion from Syria’s National Dialogue Preparations

The Kurdish National Council (ENKS) on Thursday denounced its exclusion from a session organized by Syria’s National Dialogue Conference preparatory committee, calling the move a violation of national partnership principles.
The session, held earlier in the day, brought together Hasaka natives residing in Damascus, according to Syrian state media. ENKS spokesperson Faisal Youssef criticized the absence of Kurdish political movements, stating, "The absence of Kurdish political movements from the national dialogue sessions represents a breach of the principle of national partnership."
Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who took office on January 29, had pledged to organize the conference as a step toward "free and fair elections." However, since the committee’s formation on February 11, Kurdish political factions have raised concerns over the lack of Kurdish representation, warning that it undermines Syria’s political and ethnic pluralism.
"Any national dialogue concerned with the future of Syria cannot be serious or fruitful unless it ensures the genuine participation of the various components, foremost among them the Kurdish people," ENKS stated.
In late January, ENKS and Rojava’s ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD) agreed to send a joint delegation to Damascus for discussions on the future of Kurdish representation in Syria. This week, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani called on Syrian Kurds to approach Damascus "united" and act as "homeowners, not guests" in shaping Syria’s future, emphasizing that Kurdish unity is key to their political success.
The exclusion of Kurdish representatives from the preparatory discussions has heightened tensions, with ENKS calling for greater inclusivity in Syria’s political process.
