Senior U.S. State Department officials have commended President Masoud Barzani for his leadership in fostering unity among Kurdish political factions, recognizing his role as a stabilizing force in the region.
The remarks came during a meeting between Hemin Hawrami, Head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Organizational Bureau, and senior U.S. officials, including Tom Rosenberger, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Syria and the region, and Scott Poultz, the U.S. Special Envoy for Northeast Syria.
During the discussions, Hawrami underscored President Barzani’s commitment to strengthening intra-Kurdish relations and promoting regional stability amid ongoing geopolitical shifts, particularly in Syria’s transitional phase. He also highlighted the Kurdistan Region’s strategic role in shaping developments across the Middle East.
In response, U.S. officials acknowledged Barzani’s leadership in facilitating dialogue among Kurdish factions, describing his efforts as crucial for achieving long-term stability. They reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to continued cooperation between Erbil and the U.S. in addressing regional security and political challenges.
Following the meeting, Hawrami stated: “We engaged in extensive discussions with senior U.S. State Department officials on Syria’s political transition, security dynamics, and its broader regional implications. Strengthening coordination between the Kurdistan Region and the United States remains pivotal for ensuring stability in the region.”
KDP’s Diplomatic Engagements in Washington
Hawrami’s meeting with U.S. officials followed a series of diplomatic engagements in Washington, including discussions with U.S. Congressman Eugene Vindman on Iraq’s evolving political landscape and broader regional challenges.
His visit also included participation in the 72nd National Prayer Breakfast, where he met with global leaders and U.S. policymakers to further strengthen Kurdistan’s international partnerships.
The high-level meetings highlight the KDP’s ongoing efforts to enhance diplomatic ties with the U.S. and advocate for Kurdish political and security interests amid shifting dynamics in Iraq and Syria.
