Kurdish National Council Urges Syria’s Interim President to Ensure Free Elections and Fundamental Freedoms
The Kurdish National Council in Syria (ENKS) has called on Syria’s newly appointed interim president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, to establish conditions for free and fair elections while ensuring fundamental freedoms, including freedom of thought and expression.
In a statement congratulating al-Sharaa on his appointment, ENKS urged him to take "important and necessary steps during this critical phase of Syria’s transition to end the suffering and tragedies of the Syrians, establish stability, and create suitable conditions for conducting free and fair elections, as well as drafting a constitution that guarantees the rights of all Syrians."
The council emphasized that al-Sharaa’s responsibility includes protecting fundamental freedoms and working to eliminate the destruction and oppression left by the Bashar al-Assad regime.
Additionally, ENKS called for the safe and dignified return of refugees and displaced persons, particularly those from Afrin, Tal Abyad, and Sere Kaniye.
Faisal Youssef, a member of the ENKS presidency and spokesperson for its coalition, stressed the need for swift action to end discrimination against Kurds in Syria. He highlighted key demands, including the elimination of policies such as the Arab Belt initiative and the exclusion of Kurds from official census records. He also called for the reinstatement of citizenship for those who had been unjustly stripped of it.
“The rights of Kurds and all other components of Syria must be enshrined in the new constitution,” Youssef stated, adding that the Kurdish language should be recognized as an official language alongside Arabic in Kurdish-majority areas.
He further emphasized that the future of Syria must be built on a foundation of genuine national partnership, respecting the sacrifices of those who have resisted oppression, tyranny, and terrorism in the pursuit of a democratic Syria.
Youssef also revealed that Kurdish political parties in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) are working to form a unified vision and a joint delegation to negotiate with the authorities in Damascus regarding Syria’s identity and new political structure.
