Syrian Opposition Body Thanks Kurdistan Region and President Barzani for Supporting Syrian Cause
The Syrian Opposition Negotiation Body has expressed its gratitude to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Kurdish leader President Masoud Barzani for their unwavering support for the Syrian cause. The body highlighted that President Barzani's solidarity with the Syrian people has had a profound and undeniable impact.
In a statement released on Monday, the Syrian Opposition Negotiation Body addressed both the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Region, affirming that the Syrian revolution and opposition-led military operations to overthrow the Assad regime would not pose any threat or create problems for Iraq. "We view Iraq as Syria's twin brother and partner in good and bad times, as well as a partner in the pursuit of a better, safer, and more stable future," the statement said.
The body stressed the importance of maintaining strong relations between Syria and Iraq, noting, "We have always aspired to have positive and strong relations with Iraq. The shared history, interests, and aspirations between the two countries are far too numerous to count. Iraq and Syria are two pivotal nations in the region, bearing significant responsibilities to ensure security, peace, and stability throughout the Middle East."
The statement also included a special message of appreciation for the Kurdistan Region, particularly President Masoud Barzani, for his steadfast support. "We express our gratitude to our brothers in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, especially the Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, who treated the Syrian cause as if it were his own. His support for the rights of the Syrian people has had a profound and undeniable impact," the statement read.
The body highlighted the improved living conditions of Syrian refugees in the Kurdistan Region, stating that many of them have transitioned from being refugees fleeing violence to becoming "guests of their brothers" in the Kurdistan Region. "This is thanks to the resilience of the Syrian people, as well as the bravery and valor of the revolution’s heroes. They will soon return to their homes and cities in Syria, where they will contribute to the stabilization, strengthening, reconstruction, and prosperity of their homeland," the statement added.
The Syrian Opposition Negotiation Body concluded by urging the Iraqi government to prioritize fostering stronger ties with Syria. "We call on the Iraqi government to place these facts at the top of its priorities and to genuinely and sincerely strive to turn the page on the past, starting a new chapter with the Iraqi brothers filled with cooperation, brotherhood, and peace," the statement concluded.
The statement reflects a broader effort by Syrian opposition forces to bolster regional support and strengthen diplomatic ties with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region amid ongoing conflict and displacement.
