Iraq Confirms Full Security Along Syrian Border with Four-Tier Defense System

Iraq’s Border Forces Command announced on Sunday that security along the Syrian border is fully secured, reinforced by a comprehensive four-layer defense system.

Brigadier General Khairallah Issa, Commander of the Second Border Region, confirmed to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the border is safeguarded by trenches, earthen embankments, barbed-wire fences, and a 3.5-meter-high concrete wall.

“The border is fully secured, and the situation is stable,” Issa stated, emphasizing that the crossing remains closed. He added that the current security measures are sufficient to prevent any breaches along the border.

According to Issa, the border security force consists of four brigades, six reserve battalions, and a mechanized infantry battalion. The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) are also deployed deeper within the border zone to provide additional support.

Advanced surveillance technology plays a critical role in maintaining control over the border. Issa revealed that 105 surveillance cameras monitor the area around the clock, ensuring that any unauthorized movements are detected immediately.

“No breach is expected, and additional reinforcements are unnecessary as current forces and equipment are sufficient,” he stated.

The fortified border aims to prevent infiltration, smuggling, and the movement of militant groups between Syria and Iraq, a region that has faced significant security challenges in recent years. Iraqi authorities have ramped up border defenses amid ongoing concerns over the resurgence of ISIS sleeper cells and cross-border militant activity.

The announcement underscores Iraq’s commitment to bolstering its border security and reflects the government's broader efforts to maintain stability and prevent any spillover from Syria’s ongoing conflict.
