Kurdistan Region Reports 64 New HIV Cases on World AIDS Day 2024

The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Health marked World AIDS Day by announcing 64 new HIV cases recorded in 2024, with most cases involving foreign citizens or individuals from outside the region.

In a statement, the ministry outlined steps taken to address the situation, including repatriating foreign patients and implementing preventive and treatment protocols to curb the virus's spread.

HIV, the virus responsible for AIDS, can be transmitted through blood, sexual contact, or from mother to child. The ministry highlighted that HIV often remains asymptomatic for years, gradually weakening the immune system and increasing vulnerability to other infections and cancers.

The Kurdistan Region continues to maintain one of the lowest global HIV rates, a success attributed to strong public health initiatives and adherence to cultural, social, and religious values.

The Ministry of Health encouraged citizens to undertake voluntary HIV tests and avoid high-risk behaviors. Preventive advice included refraining from unprotected sexual activities, tattooing, and sharing needles.

“Prevention is the strongest weapon in the fight against this disease,” the statement emphasized, urging the public to stay informed about HIV transmission and prevention.

The ministry concluded by appealing to the public to adhere to health guidelines and work collectively to combat communicable diseases effectively.
