UK and Kurdistan Forge Stronger Ties: Focus on Security, Economic Cooperation, and Regional Stability

On Thursday, 28 November 2024, Rebar Ahmed, the Minister of Interior for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), hosted Yvette Cooper, the United Kingdom's Secretary of State for the Home Department.

During the meeting, both sides emphasised the ongoing collaboration between the Kurdistan Region and the UK in tackling economic and security challenges in the region.

The Interior Minister highlighted the positive outcomes of his meeting with the Home Secretary, emphasising the strong and enduring relationship between the UK and the Kurdistan Region. He also addressed shared concerns over global challenges, particularly the issue of illegal immigration. Minister Ahmed further noted that the UK has consistently supported the Kurdistan Region, particularly in its efforts to advance development, peace, and stability.

Home Secretary Cooper highlighted the significance of her first official visit outside Europe, emphasising the importance of the UK’s relationship with both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. She underscored the longstanding collaboration between the UK and Iraq, particularly in security, counterterrorism, and addressing regional challenges. Reaffirming the UK’s commitment to this partnership, she stressed that security is fundamental to achieving economic prosperity.

The Home Secretary further emphasised the need for continued cooperation in combating organised crime, smuggling, and trafficking, particularly across borders. She highlighted the importance of robust law enforcement partnerships to address these challenges effectively and to ensure the safety of communities in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and in the world.

In conclusion, Cooper expressed the UK’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening its partnership with the KRG, with a focus on both security and economic cooperation. She also praised the progress made in the Kurdistan Region over recent years.
