Six Dead, Dozens Injured in Bus Accident in Central Turkey

At least six people were killed and 25 others injured on Friday after a passenger bus overturned in Turkey’s central Aksaray province, according to local authorities.

The accident occurred on the Aksaray-Ankara highway, roughly 25 kilometers from Aksaray, as the bus was traveling from Balikesir to the popular tourist destination of Cappadocia, according to Aksaray Governor Mehmet Ali Kumbuzoglu.

“Unfortunately, six of our citizens lost their lives. According to initial findings, we have 25 injured,” Governor Kumbuzoglu told Anadolu Agency (AA).

The cause of the accident remains unclear, and an investigation has been launched. “It will be concluded as soon as possible and necessary actions will be taken,” Kumbuzoglu added.

Bus accidents are common in Turkey, where traffic incidents often result in fatalities. Just a day earlier, a collision between a passenger bus and a truck claimed the life of a bus attendant and injured 17 others.

In May, a four-vehicle pileup in the southern province of Mersin left 10 people dead and 39 injured. Similarly, in December last year, a multiple-car collision in northwestern Sakarya province resulted in 10 deaths and 61 injuries.

The latest tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in the country, as authorities continue efforts to address frequent accidents on Turkey's highways.
