Erbil, Iraq – On Monday, October 14, 2024, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), led by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, hosted a conference in Erbil to discuss "Healthcare Services, Pharmaceutical and Medical Supplies Reforms, and the Strategy for Reforming the Health System." The conference focused on addressing critical healthcare reforms needed for the region’s future.

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Barzani underscored the necessity of healthcare reforms to improve services and boost public trust. “Reforming the healthcare sector is a current and future necessity to develop services and provide better care,” said Barzani, emphasizing that the government's top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.

Barzani highlighted the government's achievements in regulating the import of pharmaceuticals, preventing smuggled and expired medicines from entering the region. He stated, "Citizen safety is our primary concern, far more important than commercial gains."

The Prime Minister outlined the government's ongoing efforts to modernize healthcare infrastructure, noting the construction of new high-quality hospitals and the renovation of existing ones. "The process is ongoing, with plans to equip hospitals with the latest technology to improve the quality of services," he added.

Cancer treatment was a focal point, with Barzani announcing the establishment of several specialized cancer centers. These centers, equipped with advanced technology, will allow citizens to receive care locally, reducing the need for travel abroad for treatment. The centers are also expected to attract patients from across Iraq and the region, positioning the Kurdistan Region as a medical destination.

The Prime Minister further stressed the government's commitment to protecting the rights of doctors and patients, and urged citizens to ensure that medicines and medical supplies have proper labels, warning against the use of unregulated products.

Concluding his address, Barzani emphasized that healthcare reform is an ongoing process requiring collaboration from all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, healthcare professionals, and citizens. "Significant progress has been made, but more efforts are needed to train staff, improve medical education, and incorporate modern technology," he said, expressing optimism for the future of the region's healthcare system.

The conference showcased the KRG’s dedication to comprehensive healthcare reforms, aimed at creating a healthier and more prosperous Kurdistan Region.
