Kurdistan Region Anti-Terrorism Forces Report Casualties from Turkish Drone Strike in Makhmour

The Kurdistan Region's Counter-Terrorism Service announced on Monday, September 16, 2024, that members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) were killed and injured in a Turkish drone strike in Makhmour, a region located between Nineveh and Erbil.

According to the statement, the attack occurred at 9:45 a.m. local time, targeting a gathering of PKK members inside the Makhmour refugee camp. The strike resulted in the death of one individual and the injury of two others.

This follows a series of Turkish drone strikes on PKK targets in the region. In July, a Turkish drone targeted a vehicle belonging to the PKK in Sinjar. The Kurdistan Region's Counter-Terrorism Service reported that two PKK fighters were seriously wounded in the attack.

According to a statement by the service, the strike took place on July 8, 2024, at 11:10 a.m., targeting a PKK vehicle between Sinjar and the Tel Qasab complex. The vehicle was carrying three individuals, two of whom sustained serious injuries.

In a related development, Ibrahim Al-Sumaidaie, an advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister, disclosed the existence of coordination between Baghdad and Ankara regarding Turkish military operations within the Kurdistan Region.

In a televised interview with an Iraqi channel, Sumaidaie stated, "There is coordination with the Iraqi government concerning Turkish military operations within the borders of the Kurdistan Region." He added that "the PKK engages in criminal activities, and the Iraqi government has designated it as a terrorist organization," stressing that the Turkish operations are being carried out in coordination with Baghdad and Ankara.

For weeks, Turkish forces have been conducting incursions into Iraqi territory via Duhok province to confront the PKK. Turkey continues to launch operations against the PKK, which operates in several countries in the region, including Syria, Iraq, and Iran, with its main base in the Qandil Mountains. The group is active in many cities, regions, and valleys.
