Kurdish Leader Masoud Barzani Invited to Visit Tehran by Iranian President

Erbil, Thursday – Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), has received an official invitation to visit Tehran, according to a statement released by Barzani's office.

Barzani met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who arrived in Erbil earlier in the day to discuss strengthening bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iran.

The discussions covered a range of issues, with both leaders exchanging views on the political and economic situation in Iraq and the broader region. "The meeting emphasized the coordination and development of relations in the political, economic, and cultural fields between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran," the statement from Barzani’s office confirmed.

During the meeting, President Pezeshkian extended an official invitation to Barzani to visit Iran, marking a potential step forward in the ongoing dialogue between the two neighbors.

In a symbolic gesture, Barzani presented Pezeshkian with a copy of Mam and Zeen, a classic work of Kurdish literature. Written by Kurdish poet Ahmadi Khani, the tragic love story is considered one of the most significant works of Kurdish classical literature. Originally written in over 2,550 lines of poetry, it was first published in 1919 in Istanbul, with later translations, including a Central Kurdish version by poet Hazhar.

The invitation and literary exchange highlight the cultural and diplomatic ties between the Kurdistan Region and Iran as both sides seek to deepen their relationship.
